FRANKFORT — Secretary of State Elaine Walker will be the new commissioner of the state Department of Parks.

Walker, who has served as the secretary of state since she was appointed last January by Gov. Steve Beshear, will begin her duties with state parks on Jan. 2, said Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Marcheta Sparrow. Walker, who announced in October that she had breast cancer, lost a bid for a full four-year term as secretary of state in May’s Democratic primary election.

Walker, who served as mayor of Bowling Green for six years, replaces Gerry van der Meer, who resigned after nearly four years as state parks commissioner.

Van der Meer, of Nicholasville, said in a phone interview that he is leaving voluntarily.

Voter turnout expected to be under 30 percent on Nov. 8

FRANKFORT — Voter turnout in Kentucky for the Nov. 8 general election is expected to be about 25 to 28 percent, Secretary of State Elaine Walker predicted on Monday.

That would be considerably lower than the 37.8 percent of Kentucky voters who turned out in 2007 during the last gubernatorial election.

Still, Walker said she did not think this year’s turnout would be lower than the 22.4 percent in the 1999 race for governor. That’s when Democratic incumbent Paul Patton beat little-known Peppy Martin.

Walker based her gloomy turnout projection for this year’s election on a 75 percent decrease in absentee ballot requests.
