FRANKFORT – Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear’s re-election campaign released its sixth TV ad Friday, claiming that he has different priorities than his Republican challenger, Senate President David Williams, in handling the state budget.

In Beshear’s latest 30-second ad, a male announcer with pleasant background music touts Beshear’s handling of the state budget while newspaper headlines about that pop up.

“Despite tough economic times, Gov. Steve Beshear has balanced every budget without raising broad-based taxes,” the ad says.

Beshear backs out of U of L forum for candidates

By Jack Brammer

FRANKFORT – Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear has decided not to attend what organizers had hoped would be a rare appearance Sunday in Louisville of all three candidates for governor on the same stage.

Beshear, Republican Senate President David Williams and independent Lexington attorney Gatewood Galbraith had been invited to speak at a Sept 11 public forum organized by the Yearlings Club-University of Louisville discussion series.

The three candidates have only been on stage together once this election cycle. That was at last month’s Fancy Farm political picnic in Graves County. Williams, who trails Beshear in the polls, has accused Beshear of dodging him at several public forums for candidates.

A news release from the U of L group earlier this week said Beshear and Galbraith have accepted invitations to participate and Williams has not yet responded.

A spokesman for the Williams campaign said late Tuesday he will be present.

A spokesman for the Beshear campaign said shortly afterwards Tuesday that no decision has yet been made on whether Beshear will attend.

Matt Erwin, a spokesman for the Beshear campaign, said Wednesday that Beshear “will not be able to attend the event.”

Asked why not, Erwin declined to elaborate.

FRANKFORT – The re-election campaign of Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear released a new TV ad Tuesday that touts his stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

The 30-second ad, called “Cut,” mentions several budget reductions in the Beshear administration.

They include cutting more than $1 billion from the state budget and balancing it nine times, reducing the state workforce to the smallest level in almost 40 years, cutting his pay and the pay of his staff by 10 percent, selling two state airplanes and a parking garage and reducing the number of state vehicles.

“While families across Kentucky are tightening their belts, Gov. Beshear is doing the same in state government – leading by example while managing Kentucky government in a fiscally responsible manner,” said Beshear campaign manager Bill Hyers in a statement.

Beshear declines to participate in AARP candidates’ forum

By Jack Brammer

FRANKFORT – Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who has declined several candidate forums while leading in the polls, has informed AARP Kentucky that he will not be participating in its Sept. 12 forum.

The organization that represents senior citizens notified the campaign of Republican David Williams on Wednesday of Beshear’s decision and said it is canceling the forum but will try “to look for another date that will work for both candidates.”

“While he is unable to attend the AARP forum, Gov. Beshear recorded a video introduction for the event, completed and returned the organization’s written questionnaire and agreed to participate in a future tele-town hall with AARP members,” said Beshear campaign spokesman Matt Erwin.

Scott Jennings, a spokesman for the Williams campaign, said it’s a shame that the senior citizens of Kentucky will not be able to hear the two candidates debate the issues.

Beshear, Williams and independent candidate Gatewood Galbraith are to appear together at an Oct. 11 forum at the Kentucky Broadcasters Association conference at Eastern Kentucky University.

Former U.S. Rep. Larry Hopkins, who represented Central Kentucky’s 6th District for 14 years, is among more than 300 Republicans publicly backing Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear for governor.

Hopkins, at a news conference in Lexington Thursday with first lady Jane Beshear, said he is friends with the other two candidates for governor – Republican David Williams and independent Gatewood Galbraith — but he considers Beshear “the best leader.”

Hopkins, who was in Congress from 1979 to 1993, also endorsed Beshear for governor in 2007.

The Beshear campaign also released the names Thursday of more than 150 other Kentucky Republicans who have publicly announced their support for Beshear and his running mate, former Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson.

They included Paintsville Mayor Bob Porter, Newport Mayor Jerry Peluso and Calhoun Mayor Thomas C. Fulkerson.
