FRANKFORT — State Sen. Jerry P. Rhoads, D-Madisonville, said Friday he will not seek re-election in 2014.

Rhoads’ announcement creates an open seat in Kentucky’s 6th Senate District, which includes Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Ohio and Butler counties.

“Serving the people of the 6th District in the State Senate these past 12 years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Rhoads said in a statement.

“I will treasure the many friendships I have made throughout the counties I have represented in my three terms of service in the state Senate.

“After careful reflection, I have decided that with eight young, energetic grandchildren, it is time to step away from the hectic pace and demands of public service in order to spend more time with my family and pursue other life goals.”

Rhoads said he will continue to work in his Madisonville law practice with his brother and law partner, Tom Rhoads.
