Fayette County Democrats chose Reggie Thomas Thursday as the party’s nominee in a Dec. 10 special election to replace former state Sen. Kathy Stein in the 13th Senate District, which covers much of central Lexington.

Stein, D-Lexington, stepped down from the seat on Monday, when Gov. Steve Beshear appointed her to a judgeship in Fayette Circuit Court.

Thomas is a lawyer and professor of criminal justice and business law at Kentucky State University in Frankfort. He ran unsuccessfully for the state House’s 88th District seat in Lexington last year.

“It is my intention to follow the work ethic instilled in me by my parents to campaign tirelessly to earn the support and trust of the people of the 13th Senatorial District,” Thomas said in a news release.

Republicans have not yet selected a candidate. Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilman Chuck Ellinger II has said he would seek the GOP’s nomination.
