Washington Democrats are launching an automated phone call campaign against U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Lexington, for his role in the federal government shutdown.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said the calls that will target the first-term congressman in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District.
“While you were sleeping, Congressman Andy Barr shut down the government,” the script of the call says. “You heard that right. But even worse — Congressman Barr is still getting paid — and he’s still not listening to our frustration. All because [of] his demand to take away your benefits and protect insurance company profits.”
The call includes the phone number to Barr’s district office so Kentuckians can call Barr and tell him “stop the nonsense and focus on common sense solutions that protect our healthcare and grow our economy,” according to the DCCC.
Barr told the Herald-Leader Monday, hours before the government shutdown over President Barack Obama’s health care law, that it is Democrats who are refusing to compromise as Republicans seek changes to the law.
“The House has acted multiple times to prevent a government shutdown,” said Barr spokeswoman Catherine Gatewood in a statement Tuesday. “It is disappointing and regrettable that the Senate Democrats would rather keep their special Obamacare exemption than keep the government open.”
Gatewood said Tuesday afternoon that Barr’s district office had not seen an increase in the number of calls from constituents.
Gatewood provided the Herald-Leader with the congressman’s Washington office phone number and encouraged constituents to reach out and let Barr know how the shutdown is affecting them.
Barr’s district office can be reached at 859-219-1366. The number to his Washington office is 202-225-4706.
