FRANKFORT — Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes released an online video Thursday to invite her supporters to her campaign’s official kickoff next Tuesday in Lexington and to tell Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell, that “I don’t scare easy.”

The nearly four-minute video plays off a popular ad Grimes used in her successful 2011 campaign for Kentucky secretary of state.

That ad featured her two grandmothers, Elsie Case and Thelma Lundergan, who asked what rhymes with Grimes. Thelma Lundergan died last year.

The video, entitled “The Campaign Begins,” shows the 2011 ad and Grimes speaking directly into the camera about next year’s U.S. Senate race. It ends with the appearance of Elsie Case, who asks, “What rhymes with Mitch?”

In the video, Grimes says her late grandmother “knew that if you wanted to get something done, you don’t stand in the way.”

She said she is running against McConnell for the “people who don’t come from much, but who work hard every day making Kentucky a better place for all of us.”

She contends that McConnell, who has been in the Senate since 1985, has “wasted decades blocking legislation that would’ve helped Kentucky and our country.”

She said she personally will be holding McConnell accountable on issues ranging from women’s issues to his opposition to the minimum wage increase.

Grimes also said she does not always agree with President Barack Obama, who is highly unpopular in Kentucky, but she thinks politicians should try to work together.

The Democratic candidate who announced her intentions on July 1 to run for the U.S. Senate personally invites on the video her supporters and friends to attend the July 30 campaign kickoff in Lexington at 5 p.m. at 312 North Limestone in Lexington.

McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said he had no comment for this story.

Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, a Tea Party activist, announced Wednesday that he will be seeking the Republican nomination in the U.S. Senate race.

Your father is one of the most corrupt politicians to ever (dis)grace Kentucky, and that’s saying a lot. He is going to be neck-deep in your campaign. You supported a presidential candidate who wants to gut a key industry in Kentucky.

Your late grandmother should know what rhymes with “Grimes.” Your father committed enough of them.

I think you should be more scared of your own baggage than Mitch McConnell.

To me there are two big questions in this Senate race. Which candidate has a record of supporting and promoting Kentucky’s coal? Which candidate will vote for Harry Reid for majority leader?

  3. Buck Feshear says:

Mike those are big issues to me as well. I’m no big fan of Mitch McConnell because he is increasingly becoming a RINO, but he’d be better than the alternative the Democrats are offering.

That was a really excellent commercial.

    Congrats, Alison and good luck.
