A third Democrat has announced plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Lexington, in the 2014 race for Central Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District.

Joe Palumbo, 37, is president of Palumbo Lumber in Lexington. He’s also the son of longtime state Rep. Ruth Ann Palumbo, D-Lexington, and the husband of local television news anchor Jennifer Nime Palumbo.

“Over the past few months, many folks from around the commonwealth have asked me to throw my hat in the ring, and I’ve been humbled and honored to be considered,” Joe Palumbo said in a prepared statement on Thursday. “I’ve decided this is an opportunity to fight partisan gridlock and solve the problems holding our country and region back. I look forward to the weeks and months ahead.”

The other Democrats to declare their bids in recent weeks are education advocate Elisabeth Jensen and lawyer Michael Coblenz, both of Lexington.

Barr was elected to Congress last year, defeating incumbent Democrat Ben Chandler for the right to represent the 19-county district that includes Lexington and its suburbs, and the capital city of Frankfort.
