FRANKFORT –Republican Ken Upchurch of Monticello wants to return to his former state House seat from south-central Kentucky.

Upchurch, who represented the House’s 52nd District from 1999 to 2011, will be running against Democrat Harvey Shearer of Monticello in the Feb. 12 special election to fill the unexpired state House term of Republican Sara Beth Gregory.

Jan Yeager, a Wayne County Democratic official, said Shearer works in construction and is making his first bid for public office.

Neither Upchurch nor Shearer could be immediately reached for comment.

The House’s 52nd District includes Wayne and McCreary counties and a part of Pulaski County. Party officials in the district selected the nominees.

Gregory, of Monticello, won a special election last month for a state Senate seat.

She had joined the House in 2011. Her House term runs through the end of this year. She won a special election last month to fill the 16th Senate District seat left vacant by the resignation of Republican David Williams to become a circuit judge.
