Senate panel approves measure to abolish treasurer’s office
HERALD-LEADER FRANKFORT BUREAU
FRANKFORT — The Senate State and Local Government Committee approved a constitutional amendment Wednesday to abolish the office of state treasurer.
The sponsor of Senate Bill 51 and chairman of the committee, Sen. Damon Thayer, R-Georgetown, called the office “archaic” and said its duties should be transferred to the Finance and Administration Cabinet at a savings of about $3 million a year.
Thayer proposed similar legislation in 2008. It cleared the Senate but died in the House.
SB 51 was passed out of committee Wednesday on a 6-2 vote, with Democrats voting against it. State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach Jr., a Democrat, opposes it.

They could get rid of a lot more offices in this state and nobody would know the difference.
Seems like Melinda Wheeler ran for the office on that very idea a few years ago.
After they do this, they need to abolish secretary of state, make agriculture commissioner an appointed position like all the other commissioners in state government, and make the auditor and attorney general appointees subject to Senate approval, just like the federal government.
I wonder if Sen. Damon Thayer has taken a look at all the double, triple and quadruple (political crony) dippers he bumps into when he is in Frankfort? If he is looking to save money and eliminate archaic behavior he might want to include that in his Bill.
