FRANKFORT — The state treasury is $231,430 richer, thanks to the sale of two state airplanes on eBay.

Gov. Steve Beshear announced Tuesday that a 1975 Piper Navajo sold for $190,100 and a single-engine, 1967 Cessna Skyhawk sold for $41,330.

The sale was part of Beshear’s “Smart Government Initiative” program to make state government operations and resources more efficient.

“The sale of these two aircraft is another example of state government tightening its belt during this time of financial strain” Beshear said in a statement. “The mission of SGI is to explore all expenditures in state government, large and small, to ensure that every limited tax dollar is used in the most efficient manner.”

Beshear said all of the proceeds from the sale will go to the state’s General Fund, which pays for most state programs.

State Finance Cabinet spokeswoman Cindy Lanham said the state does not identify its eBay buyers.

The Navajo was previously operated by the Kentucky State Police. The state Department of Aviation acquired it as surplus property in 1997. The Cessna, previously operated by Somerset Community College, was acquired in 1998.

The state still owns 13 aircraft: five planes and eight helicopters.

Per the sale of these ancient aircraft, I am underwhelmed. Why not sell off all the aircraft owned by the Commonwealth? What are they used for? Get rid of them, place all proceeds in the general fund.

This is a weak tactic by the governor to demonstrate his commitment to fiscal responsibility. Not impressive, sir.
