Campaign Watchdog: Group’s health insurance claim ‘mostly false’

September 07, 2010 | | Comments 43

The statement: The federal health care reform law would mean “higher health insurance premiums — $2,100 per family.”

Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, in a television ad against Attorney General Jack Conway, the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee in Kentucky.

The ruling: Mostly false.

The facts: The conservative advocacy group’s advertisement ignores projected lower premiums for many people under the complex health care overhaul and focuses on a projected increase for some, but leaves out important facts about that claim as well.

Under the new law, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that the average premium for a family policy in the non-group market (people who don’t get insurance through an employer) would be $2,100 higher in 2016 than it would be under current law.

However, about 57 percent of those people would qualify for government subsidies. The premiums those “subsidized enrollees” would pay would average 56 to 59 percent less than under current law, the CBO said.

For people who get insurance through companies with 50 or fewer employees, the average change in premiums in 2016 would range from an increase of 1 percent to a decrease of 2 percent, relative to current law, the CBO estimated.

And for people at companies with more than 50 employees, the average change in premiums would range from nothing to a 3 percent decrease, according to the estimate. Such employment-based insurance would account for 83 percent of the market in 2016, the CBO said.

Crossroads GPS is reportedly affiliated with longtime Republican insiders, including Karl Rove, a top adviser to former President George W. Bush. The group bought more than $500,000 worth of television time in Kentucky to criticize Conway for supporting the health care bill, and targeted Democrats elsewhere as well.

The Lexington-Herald Leaders reporting – mostly false!

The ad shows Jack supports ObamaCare which he does! There’s nothing false about that, despite how much the media ignores that in Kentucky.

No one knows for sure how much it’s going to cost.. they’re still writing the bill for God’s sake!

  2. Jaspercat105310 says:

Crossroads sounds churchy, doesn’t it. These clowns are a bunch of Texas politicos and we all know that if they get the chance, Social Security and Medicare will be killed. Get another Texan (or quasi-Texan Rand Paul) in the Senate and they’re getting closer to their goal … kill Social Security and Medicare.

  3. Prof. Gilligan says:

In related news,….the most recent SurveryUSA poll shows that Rand Paul has opened up an astonishing 15 percentage point lead on Jack Conway, (55% to 40%).

That survey was made public several days ago and several Louisville news outlets reported the results.

But did the Lexington Herald Liberal make any mention of Rand Paul’s huge lead??? NOOOOO-OOOOO!!

Apparently it’s only news if the editor of the Lexington Hairless Liberal WANTS you to know about it. That’s not journalism. That’s censorship.

  4. Jeff Lewis says:

In other related news – the SUSA poll was reported by the Herald-Leader. All the current polls are discussed in a story now published.

I think the Republicans should pay “Prof. Gilligan” – who’s not a professor and not named Gilligan – a little more for each blog post. What they get for 50 cents just isn’t much.

Anyway, I’m glad we have that law that stops right-wing guys from starting their own newspaper if they don’t like the one they’re reading…oh, wait…

  5. Buck Feshear says:

Please, please, take my Social Security. Let me invest it in an IRA and get a real return on my investment. And please take my Medicare and let me be covered by the coverage I’ll have under my retirement plan!

  7. prk says:

You mean Karl Rove would tell a fib to the American people? Surely you jest….2000-2008 was the nations longest crime spree, and Rove is the culprit. This crook hates those of us in the “flyover states.”

  8. gruber2010 says:

peoples republic of korea said “2000-2008 was the nations longest crime spree, and Rove is the culprit”

Good point. Man, I wish we had some elected legislative body that could make and vote on laws that could have stopped karl rove from funding and running his war. We could call them a “congress” or some name that that and they could have power over the administrative branch…

    Hey Buck,
Obviously you do not have the guts to start your own business because I see that you have a retirement program and health insurance provided by your job.
Typical conservative to only care about themselves and not care about anyone else.
For those of us in the small business world, we do not have health insurance provided by the huge company or the union or the government that we work for, probably like you do.
I wish people like you had to buy your own health insurance like business people do. It would be fun to watch people who are spinless like you spin in the wind.

  11. Chris Mallory says:

Funny, most of the people I have talked to in the state of Kentucky, have said they are looking at health insurance rates jumping by 15-20%. We played this game in Kentucky in the early 90s. The state messed with health insurance. The citizens got higher rates and lower standards of service.

  12. James R. says:

It is amazing to me that the health insurance industry is one of only 2 businesses in the United States that is exempt from the Sherman Anti Trust Act. This means that they have government protections against competition. Too bad the republican party would not go along with democrats this year to repeal the Anti Trust exemptions. I thought republicans believed in competition.
It is time all employers drop health insurance for their employee and simply pay them more money. Then you can buy your own health insurance with your extra income.
Then all consumers would care what is going on, because they would know the full cost of coverage and know what it takes to obtain health insurance. Until then no one cares. Small business carries the highest rates of anyone in this country.

  14. pat says:

Well who is honestly surprised that the most deceitful administration in history would continue to lie through propaganda. Let’s see, WMD, Iraq war would pay for itself, Saddam/9-11 link, tax cuts for the rich create jobs, wealth trickles down. Lies, lies, and more lies, that is all they are good at. I can’t help but wonder how many of the Paulbots that comment on these sites are just paid staffers. We know they have a history of doing that. If they have this race so locked up, why are they resorting to such desperate tactics? Keep believing the poorly weighted polls (giving Republicans and Independents higher turnout than history has ever shown). This only fires up the Conway supporters and let’s the Paul supporters feel like they have it all wrapped. We will see on election day.

This article is very misleading. Healthcare costs will go up. To say that indvidual premiums for workers will not go up maybe true…But the total costs of health insurance to employers (and ultimately taxpayers). There is no free lunch in the business world….if healthcare costs to employers is going to increase, they are going to employ fewer workers, resulting in higher unemployment and greater numbers on medicaid. And not only will medicaid cost will increase, there will be less income taxes, social security taxes, and unemployment premiums paid by companies and workers. The combination of these factors will result in HUGE negative federal ans state bugdet impacts.
