Campaign Watchdog: Chandler’s claim that Barr wants to privatize social security ‘mostly false’
UPDATED AT 12:00 P.M. on 8/30/10
6TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
The statement: “Meet Andy Barr, a corporate lawyer and lobbyist who wants to privatize Social Security and gamble it in the stock market, funneling your tax dollars to Wall Street while your Social Security benefits are cut.”
– U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Versailles, in a television ad that began airing on Aug. 28, 2010.
The ruling: Mostly false
The facts: Barr, a Republican lawyer from Lexington making his first run for public office, has not called for privatizing Social Security. He has opposed it in newspaper interviews and in his campaign literature.
To support its claim, Chandler’s commercials cite a July 15 interview with Barr on WVLK-AM in Lexington. But Barr did not mention Social Security in that interview. Instead, Barr was asked by a caller if he would support the conservative budget proposals of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., ranking Republican on the House budget committee.
“Yeah, I mean absolutely. I’m not in Congress now, of course, and I don’t have an opportunity to support a particular budget,” Barr replied. “But that budget, a leaner budget, is certainly preferable to the ones that have been offered by the president and the speaker of the House.”
Ryan’s budget proposals include a plan to allow workers under age 55 to privately invest part of their Social Security withholding in personal retirement accounts. In a press release, the Chandler campaign equated Barr’s statement on Ryan’s budget proposals to an endorsement of Social Security privatization.

Have to agree with Barr (sadly) on this one…seems to send a desperation message on the part of Benny Boy if he’s going negative already. Props for being up so early (if he stays up) but .. the message is clear: Ben’s running scared. And early.

Why would anyone be surprised. Barr himself is negative about Barr.

The democrat machine just shifted into their all too familiar 5th gear. Scare the seniors! Promise the seniors everything will be protected while promising the youth that “hope” and “change” are on the way to change the world and save their future. I’d love to see these criminals hooked up to a polygraph just to see if they really believe the drivel they spout. Ben must be getting nervous; scaring the seniors is only used when the democrat politician needs to hit overdrive quickly.

We really need to get Chandler out of Washington. His support of Pelosi and Reed and their constant attack on Wall Street and business is responsible for the stagnant job market and the lingering high unemployment rate. It is sad how many people still find comfort in blaming George Bush and Wall Street when in fact the economy was doing fine in spite of Katrina, 911, and two wars until the Democrats took control of Congress in 2006. That is when the economy began a downward spiral.

redhawk – You are delusional if you think Wall Street has anything to do with creating jobs. Sucking money from the economy to line their own pockets and playing the suckers in the stock market (errrp… I mean the las vegas of the east) is their gambit.
The standard theme on Wall Street these days is that the optimum company is one with no employees … companies are just there to trade and lay on debt so wall street can take the cash and run.
So focus your ire somewhere else (I’m not saying your ire shouldn’t be focused somewhere for this mess, you are just pointed in the wrong direction)

Even at my age, if the government told me I could have every dime I had ever paid into Social Security back to invest, I’d take that deal in a heartbeat. I’d run down to the bank and open a nice big fat Roth IRA. And I really wish I’d been given that option when I first started working instead of paying into a Social Security system of which I have no guarantee that it will still be around when I retire.

I am thrilled that a Democrat has come out and defended themself against much of the negative stuff that the Teabaggers and GOPers are spewing. Ben Chandler is a seasoned politician and did you expect him not to campaign and defend himself? As far as privatizing SS, John Boehner has talked about that openly and advocated for it. So what happens to all you that think it would be such a great idea, when the market does what happened in 2008 and your Roth’s, 40lK’s and savings that you were depending on, just disappear? Don’t you think the Stock Market crash and the Great Depression, had alot to do with the initiation of social security for the elderly and disabled? What would your parents, Grand-parents and relatives do if there were suddenly no SS coming in? Are you going to help and support them? I would venture to say no, that is why SS was started in the first place. Read your history people, and educate yourselves.

No bigger indication that Chandler has internal polling showing that he is going to lose than this early he resorts to telling lies in a slimy attack ad. Puts a smile on my face that he will be unemployed after November. Born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a triple, that is Ben Chandler. Sorry Ben, we are not going to send you back to Washington to help Nancy Pelosi & Obama ruin this country, we are sending someone to STOP them instead.

More liberal elitism. You, poor little serf, are too inept to take care of your own money, or make respectable investment decisions. Give all your money to the government Social Security Ponzi Scheme to take care of you. We’re here to help…

Heh heh heh, Lynn Do you think that SS is being run better than or is more “secure” than the markets?!?!?!?!
Our politicians are inept – they cannot manage the funds. Our politicians are corrupt – they spend the money instead of keeping it in the till. These two things together should be enough to wake everyone one up. Will YOU wake up?

Now who is already hurting seniors..??

You folks that think politicians that want to ‘privatize Social Security’ want to give you more control of your money / future simply don’t understand how Washington works.
What they are doing is doing the bidding of the Wall Street bankers who want their dirty mitts on your money. They have no interest in helping you maintain or improve your nest egg, they are just looking for how much money they can make off of you.
Wake up sheepies!
And if you think you can invest your own money in the stock market these days and do better than inflation .. when you are competing with the Wall Streeters who are gaming the system, you are dreaming. You’d do better to stuff it under your mattress.

“The ruling: Mostly false”
Similarly, Ben Chandler’s statement regarding his vote on the “Bank Bailouts” is “mostly false”.
In a recent written answer to Andy Barr’s question, Ben Chandler wrote that he had votged AGAINST the bailout of Wall Street. In truth, Ben initially voted against the House version of the bank bailout, but then voted FOR the Senate version of the bank bailout, which actually became law.
My ruling: Mostly false.
If we can’t trust “candidate” Ben Chandler, how can we trust “Representative” Ben Chandler?

Big Jay, that’s rich. The republicans invented scare tactics for political campaigns. W used the threat of a 9/11 repeat to get himself re-elected. Remember all those level oranges? And how the liberals wanted desperately to kill your unborn babies and your old people? And the gays were going to destroy the institution of marriage? I could go on but I’m breaking out in hives.

The people who have such a snappy way of talking (I won’t describe it more than that) when saying that Social Security is broke, it’s corrupt, we should be ashamed to have the government baby us, and on and on…these people are YOUNG. They think they don’t need to pay into something now, in order to have something later.
And the people who say we should want to invest our Social Security money before we get it – those people are all crooks. Trust the stock market – sure.
Andy Barr may not have said this in so many words, but he is another one of these “conservative radicals” who want to take a tomahawk to the budget without looking to see who might get hurt.
The word “conservative” is supposed to mean: favoring gradual change. The opposite is “favoring immediate, complete change” – and the meaning of that is “Radical”. I leave it to you to listen closely and see if you can tell the difference.

I am so sorry to say that I do not like either one of them. I wish at least one of them would start talking about negating the trade agreements and bringing back manufacturing jobs to the home soil. If we are contributing to social security at the rate that these jobs pay and not the ones that the “service” jobs pay, then we will not have to worry about social security. Why don’t we have candidates that are worthwhile?
Hattie | Aug 30, 2010 | Reply
Reply to Lynn: A nice job of explaining SS. I suggest everyone start watchdogging the Republican threats to senior services. If social security is cut, or the eligibility age raised, more people will slip into poverty. Every percentage point hike in the poverty rate hurts our economy. Chile tried privatizing SS with disastrous reults.

Told ya he would do this! http://www.seebenspend.com has had a video up for weeks showing Chandler’s history of vicious ads! He ran Bruce Lunsford out of the gubernatorial primary in ’03. If going negative is a gift, Ben’s loaded!
Virtually everything that comes out of Chandler’s mouth is negative. I’ve studied his rhetoric, and it is consistently designed to depress and intimidate people into “trusting” him. Even in his website release about the housing crisis, he inserted the sentence “Aren’t you glad they didn’t privatize social security?” He wants seniors to cower in the corner, certain that anyone else will rip their checks out of their hands. He uses these scare tactics to dismiss off-handedly ANY look at reforms, whether or not privatization is a suggested factor. According to Ben Chandler’s rhetoric, he purely wants people frightened and dependent. In my book, a guy like that’s a bully.

The only ones threatening seniors is Obama and the democrats. The new health care is taking millions out of medicare. These unreal deficits are going to kill SS in the long run.
I am beginning to believe that the November elections will dwarf anything we have ever seen in political history. The republicans may pickup 75 seats in the house, and 12 in the senate.
Obama was right about one thing —- CHANGE —- He is going to bring a change upon this country like nothing we have seen since the revolutionary war. People have been getting more upset with big government and judicial activism year after year. Obama and the dems have lit the fuse, and a new revolution will begin in November. Obama and the dems totally misread the American public in 2008, and have stumbled beyond my belief.

SS was established during the FDR administrations BECAUSE EVERYONE had seen what had happened to elderly people during the Great Depression. There was NO safety net and that is what SS was created to be. The single reason the program is floundering monetarily is because CONGRESS takes money from its funds and NEVER repays it. They use SS as a private piggy bank. Historically, the Republican party has since FDR’s creation of SS tried to eliminate it. That is their mission and if anyone pays close attention, it has been tried over and over and over again to be “killed” in each and every Republican administration by some various means. G.W. Bush’s act was the “let’s privatize part of it”. This is and will be a never ending political fight between the Dems and Reps for as long as we have those two parties. Heck, there were many, many Republicans who called WWII “FDR’s War”, like they were not even involved in it, just like many now call the wars that started under Bush “Obama’s wars”. As long as we people in either party who can not work with each other without trying to make points, rather than actually doing something good and proper for the AMERICAN CITIZEN, then we will be hearing this constant “drumbeat” about SS and other programs someone doesn’t like, because THEY did not or cannot make money off them.

After it took me four weeks of calls and two weeks of going to Bens office last August I finally got an appointment with him. When ask if he would do a town hall he replied:”Why would I want to do that I never have?” Because you work for us Ben! When asked Why he voted for the Cap and Trade Bill? (That Barrack Obama has said would bankrupt the coal industry!)He said:”Well I have to listen to the scientist.” Never mind that Kentucky gets almost 90% of its electricity from coal! The coal severance tax pays all of our taxxes on our groceries folks! He talks up the fact that he did not vote for Obamacare. He fails to mention he voted twelve times to help the bill proceed through the House! If Pelosi had needed his vote he would have been right there as he has been well over 85% of the times for her! Gang, Ben Chandler does not care about Kentucky he only cares about the Democratic agenda and his own career! His Grandfather must be spinning in his grave!
Randall | Sep 3, 2010 | Reply
Ben Chandler is not trying to help KY. Any congressman from KY should be willing to support coal and the production of coal. The Cap and Trade Bill, which he voted for, will effectively kill the KY coal industry. THis will be a job and economy killer. The majority of the legislation that Ben has supported has been job killing legislation. This type of leadership is not good for KY nor the nation.
Now to see Ben twisting the truth on Andy Barr only tells us that he is worried that Andy will be able to defeat him in the coming election. Neither party needs to resort to lying in order to win. The facts should tell the tale. Ben beleives in bigger Govt and more spending, Andy beleives in smaller Govt and less spending. This is a major difference between the candidates and the parties.

What would your parents, Grand-parents and relatives do if there were suddenly no SS coming in?
This is a particularly pertinent question, but not for the reason you asked it. This scenario is certainly going to happen if the current system is not amended and soon. The Federal Government has been raiding this fund for years and if they don’t get their grubby little fingers out of it, it will be insolvent by 2037. If this had been a private company raiding the fund, there would be a lot of people in jail.
Now to address the privatizing issue. Actually, you are mistaken to characterize the stock market in such a light. The stock market has been an excellent place to invest money and historically, any downturn in the market has always corrected itself. In the short run, yes, the market can be a volatile place to put your money, but in the long run, the market is an excellent investment. The market has always been a challenge to interpret, but it is a good place to start. Mutual funds have always been a safe investment, but also yield a smaller return. For another thing, there was an experiment in Galveston, TX where city workers were given the option and they have done remarkably better in their returns than the traditional person in the SS system. They did their own investing and on average they received two to five times more return on investment than people without the option. That is a positive result if you ask me.
