UPDATE: Caliparis cancel fund-raiser for Beshear
UPDATED AT 11:00 P.M.

FRANKFORT — Within hours after the media began reporting Wednesday that University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach John Calipari would host a $1,000-a-person fund-raiser at his Lexington home for Gov. Steve Beshear, Calipari changed his mind.
“I hope by now you all realize that I don’t take my position as your basketball coach lightly,” Calipari said on his Facebook page about 9:40 p.m. “I know how politically charged this state is and I recognize that the Big Blue Nation comes from both sides of the aisle. I appreciate every elected official who supports the University of Kentucky, regardless of party.
“That said, the governor’s event planned for August 11 — along with other charitable functions scheduled for our home — have been canceled after realizing the full plate of both professional and pressing, personal matters I will be tending to in the next couple of months. Ellen and I do hope this discussion will lead you to exercise your right to vote in the upcoming elections.”
Beshear spokesman Matt Osborne e-mailed a statement from Beshear that the governor and his wife “have always believed that family comes first. With that said, we fully understand the decision by our good friends — the Caliparis — to focus on family issues rather than politics and charitable endeavors. We appreciate their support of our efforts and offer our continued support for them and all they do on behalf of the Big Blue Nation.”
Soon after the Herald-Leader posted the story on Kentucky.com Wednesday, commenters began expressing outrage that Calipari was taking a partisan political stance.
The Caliparis had planned to host a cocktail reception fund-raiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 for Beshear and his running mate, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson.
Osborne said in a statement before the cancellation that Beshear and Abramson “are pleased to have the support of Coach and Mrs. Calipari, along with the support of thousands of others across Kentucky.”
Osborne said invitations were sent to “friends of the Caliparis.” He declined to say how many invitations went out.
The July 19 invitation letter from Calipari, who could not be reached for comment, called Beshear “a strong and informed leader.”
But, beyond that, the letter didn’t read like a strong partisan testimonial for Beshear. Calipari wrote that he supports “the people in office because they were put there by their constituents.”
“I learned early on in my first year as Kentucky head coach that the Big Blue Nation is united in its love of the Wildcats. Politics, I quickly understood, does not have such a consensus,” Calipari wrote.
Calipari might have been referring to a political move he made in September at UK that was not welcomed by all of his fans.
At the time, Calipari said on his Facebook page that he intended to send a Kentucky jersey to President Barack Obama, causing some to respond with comments laced with profanity that led to the post being deleted.
The coach offered an explanation on Facebook, saying there was “NOTHING political about it — it was simply a way of spreading the word of Big Blue Nation into the White House.”
Calipari offered an apology if he offended anyone.
Dave Scott, who co-wrote the book Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life with Calipari, said last March of the brouhaha: “Some things you don’t touch, and politics is probably one of them.”
Calipari isn’t the only Kentucky coach to have been stung by brushes with politics. In 1996, then-UK coach Rick Pitino irritated some fans by appearing onstage with President Bill Clinton during his re-election campaign.
Pitino later said U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning, a Republican from Kentucky, wrote in a letter to him that he was no longer a UK basketball fan because Pitino introduced Clinton, a Democrat, at an election eve campaign rally at UK.
Pitino said his distaste for politics was intensified by Bunning’s letter.
In the invitation letter to the Beshear fund-raiser, Calipari said Beshear and his wife, Jane, “have welcomed our family to the commonwealth with open arms and this opportunity will be one for Ellen and me to both thank Governor Beshear and the first lady and also to continue the robust discussion he has led on economic development — despite these difficult times.”
The Democratic governor held a reception for Calipari at the Governor’s Mansion in May 2009.
During the reception, reporters asked about Calipari’s prediction at his first news conference as UK coach that state Agriculture Commissioner and UK basketball fan favorite Richie Farmer would be governor someday.
Beshear laughed and said Farmer would have to wait until he was finished. Farmer, a Republican, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for governor next year.
Calipari’s invitation letter said “the vulnerability of incumbents during economic uncertainty is no secret and … the governor needs to gird for a competitive and costly campaign ahead.”

Just a question – Does Steve Beshear not realize there are hundreds of lower level offices up for election THIS year?
Does Steve Beshear not realize Republicans control the State Senate? Does Steve Beshear not understand 1/2 of the Senate offices are up for elections? Does Steve Beshear not understand Dems only have 17 State Senate seats?
Does Steve Beshear not understand he is taking money out of the democratic campaigns running THIS year? Does Steve Beshear care about anybody but himself in this election cycle?
Obviously not!
Well, there goes my support for Calipari. I do not want a UK coach who meddles in state politics, regardless if it is with either party.
Sincerely,
Former Calipari Fan
Hmmm how about fund raising for the people in Pikeville trying to rebuild after the flood.
Now I know who not to vote for
Coach Cal is simply showing his personal support to the current Governor. Not a big deal IMO, regardless of one’s political affiliation. Nothing to get upset over one way or the other as best I can.
Well, this is too bad…I wasn’t a Beshear fan before, and now I’m not a Calipari fan. Cal needs to stick to coaching and stay out of politicking. Not a good career move.
Everybody is entitled to at least one mistake. However, I don’t know why the coach would want to do something that fifty percent of the population is not going to like. How’s that going to make him look when Beshear looses? It’s not likely that the republicans are going to forget about it. I hope he never needs a favor from them.
All in all this is not a big deal, but it is completely unnecessary. Calipari should understand what a sensetive subject politics is in our state. Unfortunately, a move such as this can somewhat divide the Big Blue Nation and could have been avoided. There are other ways to showed your appreciation for Governor Beshear without hosting an official fundraiser.
When Calipari gets UK put on probation, or if he keeps churning out teams full of draft picks who can’t win championships, this will backfire on Beshear.
The UK basketball coach shouldn’t have gotten involved in state politics with this dumb fund raiser. There goes my support for this one and done coach. And if the University is going to allow this public spokesman to make this kind of move, I’m also done with UK.
Last time I checked, Cal is a Catholic and a staunch conservative when it comes to politics. He is doing what he needs to do to keep UK off the chopping block next time the CURRENT governor has to make a budget. That, believe it or not, is part of his job and will keep him in the good graces of the University. Now, when Beshear loses, he will be doing fundraisers for whoever wins, continuing to bolster UK and speak for it by kissing the backside of whatever governor is in office.
How about all the flooded victims in Eastern Kentucky that have no homes or no place to go!?!?! THERE YA GO COACH!!!
I agree 110%. Does anyone know how to spell impeach?
Poor choice Coach Cal. Basketball or politics? Choose one..
I’m a True Blue Fan…..and a conserative Republican…….This is like Billy Graham or the Pope endorcing someone….won’t ever happen.
What a DUMB-A** decision!!
It appears you didn’t “check” very close. Coach Cal is a strong Catholic and a long time supporter of Democratic candidates in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York, and now, Kentucky. There are many public websites, such as OpenSecrets.org, that clearly display who donates money to political campaigns.
How does a strong Catholic justify raising money for the Abortion Party?
Since labels are so easily tossed about by so many who claim to be Christian, how do you justify Rudolph Guiliani, Colin Powell, Scott Brown, John Rockefeller, Jeb Bush, Laura Bush, Mark Kirk, Mary Bono….and many, many other conservative Republican Americans who are pro choice. Just because you are judgemental and holding a firm grasp on ignorance doesnt justify using Christianity to denegrate other Christians.
Very bad choice to get involved in politics!! Stick with coaching and basketball which is controversial enough here! ! Is this a UK endorsement also?? Coach should be one and done after this blunder!!
I completely agree. Coach Cal is not entitled to support a candidate for public office and express any opinions or personal beliefs. It is like he thinks he is an American living in a democratic society or something. Outrageous.
If he doesn’t believe what I believe then I hate him (until Midnight Madness.) Now THAT is American.
Well there goes my UK stuff i am taking my uk plate off my car and taking my Uk wear to the good will store this sucks and so does coach cal now BOO!
Crap, we don’t need this. This could, and probably will hurt recruiting to some extent.
Coach Cal…..you are the best….Beashear is the greatest..
I, for one, am happy that our coach is a Democrat.
Folks, you all need to get a life!! EVERYONE, even Coach Cal, has a right to support whomever they wish. I believe that is called an American right and has nothing to do with his ability to coach basketball. If you love KY basketball, then you support it, regardless of the coach’s choice in politics.

There are two things I really like about this: first, that they ran a picture of Riche, the Governor, and Cal. Richie is a member of the administration, of the other party; his ambitions in the future are well known and Cal recognizes them.
See, we’re Kentucky. People from different parties can be friends here! We’re human, and we don’t let loud noises from the Teanut Gallery bother us.
Second – the timing. Cal’s fundraiser, in public terms, only lasted a few hours – so now when all the Republicans pillory him over the next three days, and the Tea Party folks get their napkins in a knot – they will be talking about a past event. But of course, once they get wound up they HAVE to spout.
And as they do, they will be making sure that Rand Paul has another bad week. Nobody is focused on the governor’s race next year; whatever controversy there is gets attached to the Senate race heating up now – and Cal has as good as endorsed the whole ticket.
I thought we all believed in the constitution. John Calipari has every right to support whomever he wishes to support. While we are in Kentucky, this is still America.
If any Kentuckian is swayed in their political beliefs because of the political beliefs of the Kentucky Basketball coach, then you should be ashamed of yourself. i would hope you have better convictions than that.
I love democracy and like to see it practiced not shut down by some loudmouths who are uncomfortable in their own skin.
I am more interested in the governor’s race next year than I am in the Senate race this year. That has partly to do with the fact that both Paul and Conway are not worthy of support, and mostly to do with the fact that the governor’s race is much more important to this state and its residents than is the Senate race.
What an un-loyal group of fans!!! Coach Cal has the right to support any politician or political party that he wants. If Kentucky basketball has another great season like last year, I bet those who said they hate UK now will forget all about this!!
Don’t worry Coach — there are still plenty of loyal fans who support you and the university. You shouldn’t have let a few idiots influence you that much.
And I think your choice to support Beshear is a smart one!
I see coach Cal is backtracking already. This doesn’t bode well for another UK basketball that attempts to use UK basketball to advance his own partisan political agenda. He clearly hasn’t learned from the mistakes of the last such UK basketball coach, you know the one that currently is the U of L coach.
Hey Leslie, you might wan to back off on the nut-hugging a little.
I agree with Charolette. You may disagree with Governor Beshear and Coach Cal on their political beliefs, but it is Coach Cal’s 1st Amendment right. And the 1st Amendment also gives you the freedom to complain, but that doesn’t mean you are correct.
If Cal really wants to support the winner in the next Governors election he may want to get to know Gatewood.
