HAZARD — The Republican U.S. Senate candidates turned up the volume on their television ad shouting match Monday, this time over the sensitive issue of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Trey Grayson, Kentucky’s secretary of state, used his latest ad to again hammer his rival, Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul, on national security issues.

“Paul even wonders whether 9/11 was our fault,” a female announcer says in the spot that began airing Thursday. The commercial then shows Paul speaking at a Blue Grass Policy Institute forum in March 2009, saying: “Maybe some of the bad things that happen are a reaction to our presence in some of these countries.”

Paul, in that quote, was paraphrasing his father, a Texas congressman and 2008 presidential candidate. Ron Paul made a comment in a 2007 presidential debate that U.S. foreign policy, such as building military bases in Muslim countries, fueled anger among radicals. Despite being booed by the GOP audience, the comment helped raise the elder Paul’s national profile.

After paraphrasing his father, Rand Paul went on to say during that 2009 forum that “I think that message can be presented and be something that Republicans can agree to.”

Paul, a Bowling Green eye doctor, vehemently denied on Monday that he believes U.S. foreign policy has been a justification for the Sept. 11 attacks. In an interview, he said Grayson “takes three to four words out of context and he draws a conclusion that is not true.”

Paul cut a response commercial Sunday.

“America was attacked, and fighting back was the right thing to do,” Paul says directly to the camera in the new 30-second spot. “Now a desperate Trey Grayson is using 9/11 to attack my integrity and my patriotism. Trey Grayson, your shameful TV ad is a lie and it dishonors you.”

The Grayson campaign has culled several quotes from among the hours of Paul’s recorded speeches that reside on YouTube and other sites. Grayson ticked off some of those lines at Saturday’s Republican Party 5th District Lincoln Day dinner in Corbin.

“He even thinks we played a role in causing 9/11,” Grayson said of Paul.

Among Paul’s quotes Grayson cited were: “They come here because we’re over there” and “they’re in our face in our country because we’re in their country.’”

In neither of those quotes does Paul say the terrorists were justified in attacking.

Still, Paul’s foreign policy views are more nuanced than his statement in his response ad that “fighting back was the right thing to do.”

For instance, Paul has said he agrees an immediate strike against terrorists in Afghanistan after 9/11 was warranted but objects to past presidents, rather than Congress, making the decision to go to full-scale war.

Despite domestic issues, such as the recently passed health care bill and the economy, remaining the dominant topics with voters, Grayson has tried to use national security issues to highlight differences with Paul, who leads in recent polls.

Grayson has unabashedly embraced government efforts aimed at terrorists, including keeping the detention camp in Guantanamo Bay and supporting the U.S. Patriot Act.

Paul said in an interview he disagrees with the Patriot Act because “I think you should have a warrant before you go into someone’s house.”

I’m certain Paul, and Adams would like to take back what he has said, but it doesn’t work that way in the real world. Calling Grayson a liar only makes it more shamefull, go to you tube, and hear it all for yourself!!! Wake up Republicans, this Tea party stuff is a fad, and bad for our party, and if we are going to take Washington back from the liberals, we better send a Republican, not someone out of touch with the real world, and drunk on tea!!!! Wake up, and remember what Ross got us was Bill Clinton!!!

    Albey

  2. BG says:

    Albey,

You mean the Bill Clinton Trey supported in the 1990′s? So you’d rather have a Democrat/RINO than a principled Constitutionalist who read the 911 CIA report? Someone who actually believes we can make policy mistakes?

Ah, forget a public movement that is an outcry for justice and less taxation? Albey, you sure you are not a Democrat hoping the lesser candidate wins so Lt. Dan or Litigation Jack can win?

Remember, Trey even said recently that he doesn’t like the Private economy! BIG GOVERNMENT TREY, NO WAY!

  3. Jack McCock says:

By calling Trey Grayson a liar, Rand Paul is telling the truth. All Trey Grayson has done is tell lies about Rand Paul and distort his positions. Trey Grayson can’t win on his own merits, so he turns to lies, distortions, and smears to try to deceive the public to elect him. The way he is going, the saying “If you can’t dazzle ‘em with brilliance, baffle ‘em with bulls!#*” might as well be his campaign’s official slogan. As far as “…remember what Ross got us was Bill Clinton” goes, Trey Grayson supported Bill Clinton back in ’92, when Clinton was all for nationalized health care and more gun control. This, and his current support for the Patriot Act proves that Trey Grayson is in favor of expanding government power. There are many constitutional concerns with the Patriot Act, especially dealing with the 4th Amendment. AIG’s support of Trey Grayson in the form of DC fundraisers also shows how out of touch he is with the people. Rand Paul- For the Constitution, For the People.

Trey Grayson is the only candidate who will get Bin Laden. Rand Paul cares too much about jobs and the economy to be the next senator from Kentucky. Everyone knows we need protection from radical jihad here in Kentucky! Grayson for Senate!

  5. James Madison says:

It is indisputable that Rand Paul has reached out to truthers. He has made multiple appearances on the Alex Jones show out of Austin, Texas who is a big conspiracy theorist.

Alan Grayson, Walter Jones, Jeff Flake also appeared on the Alex Jones show. Does that mean they are truthers? Of course not. Getting interviewed does not mean you agree with the other guy, otherwise people would hardly talk to any media.

  7. kentuckyconservative says:

Knowing Mr. Brock personally, it is outrageous to call him anything less than a true conservative, and something that you probably can’t boast, a true Kentuckian.
I do agree with your argument that most democrats would be pro-Rand, that is because Democrats know that Rand would be blown out of the water in a general. Rand Paul will continue to be exposed for what he is, and what his supporters are. I agree in that the tea party is bad for the republican party, but also good because it has reminded some of us republicans what we stand for. The bad part is the alienation and the anti-establishment routine. I personally am offended with the attacks on county parties, and elected officials, claiming that they are part of the establishment, and should be abolished. It is disrespectful to insult the fine folks that have worked years to bring the Kentucky GOP to relevance. It wasn’t long ago, that the democrats ruled the state, and now for the new tea party/libertarian party to spit on their hard work is going to split the party in two.

  8. James Madison says:

While appearing on the show does not explicitly mean that you agree with the host, I see no reason to ever go on the Alex Jones show. Rand was on there to pander to a big part of his dad’s base which is also a big part of his base.

  9. Dan says:

Another desperate move by a candidate who is down double-digits with about seven weeks left. There is no level to which Grayson won’t stoop to try and salvage what is his career: politics.

  10. Kelsey says:

They are both losers. Its Dr Dans for the taking.

  11. Jack McCock says:

Actually, according to the most recent polls, neither Mongiardo nor Conway would beat either Republican; with Rand Paul outperforming Trey Grayson against the Democrats.
