Senate OKs alternative teaching certification

The state Senate unanimously approved legislation Thursday creating another avenue for alternative teaching certification through the Teach for America program aimed at recent college graduates interested in trying out being an educator.

The legislation, Senate Bill 180, dovetails with Kentucky’s application for as much as $200 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Race to the Top program, said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. David Givens, R-Greensburg. If Kentucky wins the grant it would help pay for teachers hired through the Teach for America corps, he said.

Among those who worked on the bill, Senate Bill 180, was Senate intern Shelby King of Georgetown.

  1. I wonder when a teacher can go take one test to become a surgeon. Surgeons make more money and since I’ve had surgery in the past, I should be qualified.

“Converting” non-teachers into teachers is a REALLY BAD idea that is being promoted by people who don’t know how to teach. If starting a new career was that simple, I would “convert” to being an attorney, or doctor, or accountant… It just doesn’t work that way.

  2. Teacher, with all due respect, you are full of crap, and are representative of the educracy that is such a closed society and protective of itself.

I have a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in my field and 30 years of experience that has been recognized statewide for excellence. Yet I would have to go out and get another degree and special certification to be able to teach? That is pure stupidity and is just another example of the educrats protecting their turf. It’s insulting for anyone to say that I’m not qualified to be a teacher just because I don’t have a certain degree that is blessed by the educrats in the Capital Plaza Tower.
