Just look at an easy, black and white issue like cockfighting. If Stumbo and company won't stand up to a bunch of criminal cockfighters they will never take a stand against big business. Brett Harvey. Coal layoffs are because of market downturns - the world is using less coal - not because the companies are being told to obey the law. I saw a lot of citizens from Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the state coming together to confront an outlaw coal industry that has destroyed our water, land, and health in Eastern KY. "Environmentalists?" We were hearing from some of the only people in Frankfort not in the pocket of the coal industry. This was a phenomenal event, but a really poorly framed story.
