FRANKFORT – The Republican U.S. Senate campaign of Rand Paul confirmed Thursday night that its spokesman, Christopher Hightower, resigned after political blogs listed controversial materials related to him.

Paul’s chief rival, Secretary of State Trey Grayson, immediately said Hightower’s views and behavior “have no place in this campaign” and that “Paul’s judgment is seriously in question at this point.”

Grayson said Paul should make it clear where exactly he agrees and disagrees with Chris Hightower.

The blogs, Barefoot and Progressive and Page One Kentucky, reported that Hightower had posted on his MySpace page for two years a statement from someone else declaring “Happy N***** Day” near Martin Luther King Day and a photo of a lynching.

The Hill, a congressional newspaper that publishes daily when Congress is in session, picked up the blogs’ report.

David Adams, campaign manager for Paul, said Hightower resigned because of Internet postings.

In a statement, Adams said, “Today, the Rand Paul campaign became aware of some disturbing images on a social network site attributed to a campaign staffer.

“The images were not placed there by this employee but by someone posting on the site. These images in no way represent Dr. Paul or his campaign nor do they represent the beliefs of this staff member. These images are reprehensible and have no place in civil discourse.”

Paul, in a statement, said, “I have never heard a single utterance of racism from this staffer nor do I believe him to have any racist tendencies. However, it is impossible to present the ideas and reforms we need in this country with this controversy present. Therefore I have accepted his resignation.”

Recently, Hightower got into a controversy by making light of a video that portrayed Grayson as Hitler.

The Courier-Journal reported Thursday that Hightower resigned a few hours after he told one of its reporters that he had never been a member of myspace.com and that the words on the site were not his.

  1. With the way the Kentucky GOP works, being exposed as a lynching-loving racist might actually help Rand Paul in the primary.

  2. KookyTracker says:

It isn’t just the Chris Hightower fiasco that Rand should answer to. He’s openly drawing aid from neo-nazi organizations like Stormfront who post messages all over their bulletin boards for his money bombs. Rand should renounce such posts and make it clear that he opposes such efforts to link his name with these extremists.

    See this link for example-

So Mike are you finally going to answer how much money you make off the taxpayer?

  4. Taika says:

This is an outrageous smear job by the Grayson campaign. They must be getting desperate, going from the anointed of the establishment, to trailing in the polls and fundraising behind a real statesman.

Hightower is an upstanding man and hard worker – a great threat to Grayson. Let me get this straight, SOMEONE ELSE posts on a Myspace page he never even owned. This is then linked to Rand?? How unreliable is info like that? Why the HECK are all the news services reporting a non-issue like that?

How much is Mike Bryant, Breathitt’s “Republican” chairman, being paid to tear down a real Republican?

The establishment is desperate to keep their power. Control over TRILLIONS of our dollars is on the line. Since pouring special interest money into Rand’s opponent isn’t working, and they can’t find any dirt on Rand… they make things up… truly pathetic.

For the sake of the truth, and our freedom, we need to work even harder to overcome the campaign of lies and dirty tricks. I pray that we may defeat the career politicians and take back our country!

  5. Jim says:

Take back our country from who exactly?

you’re the one taking our country away.

  6. Miguel says:

First of all this isn’t the first time that this has come up about Paul…We all know that Rand is a closet racist, you can’t hate the man for who or what he is.

By the way Chris you right just might help his voting popularity.

I met Paul a few times and Rand couldn’t even look me in the eyes and his camp, well; lets just say they were just as eager to speak to the non-Black and non-Hispanic folks behind me than to address the only non white person in the room.

The truth is if someone is audacious enough to run a National Campaign that mirrors a segregated 20′s and 1960′s era, than more power to them. It is his choice.

Paul, in a statement, said, “I have never heard a single utterance of racism from this staffer nor do I believe him to have any racist tendencies. However, it is impossible to present the ideas and reforms we need in this country with this controversy present. Therefore I have accepted his resignation.”

NOTE: the key phrase is “I HAVE NEVER HERD A SINGLE UTTERANCE OF RACISM FROM THIS STAFFER.” Doesn’t mean he hasn’t herd it form other staffers or himself!

At the end of the day, “it is what it is” and this is America and the one thing we love most is a Choice regardless of Good or Bad. Rand’s choice to be or not to be a racist, is his choice…

All I can do know is that I wouldn’t vote for him!

Every member of the teaparty is supporting Rand for Senate. It is in the tea leaves: Senator Rand Paul. Change is a coming!!!

  8. Tricky Dick says:

That kooky fat boy in Jackson sure spends a lot of time on racist blogs. Wonder if he comments on them.

  9. Miguel says:

    Maurice Sweeney for US Senate!

I would like to see Paul and Maurice Debate…Let the Tea Party set that one up…

Some of the Paul followers are following blind and it is time to switch sides to the Democratic side and support Maurice Sweeney for US Senate…

Maurice is a real bridge to a New Hope and Change in KY…

We need Leaders in office who have less self-interest and more of a KY Interest…

  10. Carl says:

Right on Tricky Dick, Mike Bryant loves playing kooky blogger games and now he’s been busted. Does Trey even know where Breathitt County is?
