WW II veteran signs up for U.S. Senate race
FRANKFORT — Gurley L. Martin, who will turn 86 on Nov. 27, plopped down $500 Monday in the secretary of state’s office to file as a Republican candidate in next year’s U.S. Senate race.
Martin, a World War II veteran from Owensboro, is the 11th Kentuckian and sixth Republican to enter the race.
“I want to save the American way of life,” Martin said after he officially filed for the office.
Martin is making his first political race in Kentucky. He said he ran for commissioner in Texas City, Texas, while he worked there for Union Carbide. A native of Hartford, Ky., he said he returned to the Bluegrass State nine years ago.
In a news release, Martin said he will not be running against anyone. He said the real trouble-maker in the world is Satan.
Asked the condition of his health, Martin said, “I’m here, aren’t I? My health is wonderful. Every day is a thrill.”

Other Republican candidates in the U.S. Senate race are Secretary of State Trey Grayson, Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul, Todd County businessman Bill Johnson, Northern Kentucky consultant Roger Thoney and Oldham County teacher Brian Oerther.
Democrats in the race are Attorney General Jack Conway, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, former U.S. Customs agent Darlene Fitzgerald Price of McCreary County and Eastwood businessman Maurice Sweeney.
John Long, a convenience store operator in Boyle County, filed last week as an independent candidate.
The Senate seat is attracting a host of candidates as Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning of Southgate has decided not to seek re-election.

Mr. Martin is the best Republican candidate in the race.

He sounds utterly unserious. This looks like a vanity campaign to see one’s name in the local newspaper more than anything else basically.

You wish, Bill.

He should fit right in with the rest of them. $500 is cheap to have lobbyist come at you with all kinds of offers.
Everyone needs to enter the race and show what a mockery it has become.
They talk about issues that have nothing to do with their job. They take money (votes) from organizations from outside the state who they do not represent.
It’s a joke anymore and it seems we have all accepted it as okay.

Go Mr.Martin! I would love to see someone from the “Greatest Generation” help take this country back from these spoiled rotten, politically correct, tattle-taling brats with their huge sense of entitlement.
Even if you are not serious about running, could you at the very least spank them soundly and send them to their rooms?
GOD BLESS YOU SIR AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!!!
