State Democratic Party picks veteran communications spokeswoman
FRANKFORT – Barbara Hadley Smith, who was press secretary for Gov. Martha Layne Collins in the 1980s, is the new director of communications for the Kentucky Democratic Party.
Smith will replace Liz Fossett, who said she will be pursuing job opportunities in Lexington.
Smith said she will be focusing on the Dec. 8 special election for the seat recently vacated by former Senate Majority Leader Dan Kelly, R-Springfield.
That race in the 14th Senate District that includes Marion, Mercer, Nelson, Taylor and Washington counties will feature Democrat Jodie Haydon of Bardstown against Republican Jimmy Higdon of Lebanon.
Smith has been spokeswoman for several Democratic gubernatorial candidates, including Ben Chandler in 2003, Grady Stumbo in 1983 and Terry McBrayer in 1979.
She also was press secretary for former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane and former Lexington Mayor Pam Miller and is a former director of communications for the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Bar Association.

Perfect fit. Barbara Hadley Smith has been adept at spinning and lying for years for various state agencies. Now she gets the job of doing the same for KDP, trying to convince Kentuckians that Democrats can solve this state’s problems when the fact of the matter is not only have the Democrats failed to solve them for years, they have actually caused them.
Hope you can sleep at night, Barbara, doing what you are going to be asked to do in the coming months or years. Personally, my conscience wouldn’t allow me to try to deceive the people, but your mileage obviously varies and has for years.
I wonder how she would SPIN THIS?
