FRANKFORT — A GOP candidate running for the U.S. Senate from Kentucky faces a self-imposed midnight deadline to raise $1 million from cyber donors.

Rand Paul raised a quick $100,000 in the first few hours of the Internet-based fundraiser on Thursday.

Paul, an eye surgeon from Bowling Green, borrowed the fundraising idea from his father, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who banked $6 million in a single day for his presidential campaign last year.

Campaign manager David Adams said he is “greatly encouraged” by the early response to the latest cyber fundraiser. Adams said he remains hopeful the campaign can hit the $1 million mark.

Paul faces two other Republicans – Secretary of State Trey Grayson and western Kentucky businessman Bill Johnson – in next year’s primary election.

  1. resident says:

I would have been interested before his ridiculous comments on “grandma” and health care.

  2. jerry says:

Why don`t he just ask “uncle” Mitch for it? After all he will be his “Water boy” if he gets elected.

  3. Jim Anderson Stivers says:

    Good luck, Foil Hat!

Granda and Grandpa could use a little more cash to keep the government from pulling the plug.

  4. Jim says:

Rand Paul is NOT endorsed by Mitch McConnell! Mitch McConnell has told all of his supporters to donate to Trey Grayson. Some of you should check out Rand Paul before you put him down.

If you like big government, high taxes, an $11.6 Trillion National Debt, out of control government spending, and run away monetary inflation then you won’t like Rand Paul.

  5. James Butabi says:

Good for him. Rand Paul is an excellent level headed guy with good judgement. I trust him to make good choices in the senate.

  6. specs says:

    He certainly won\’t be Mitchie\’s \”waterboy\”.
You must be thinking of Grayson, Rand\’s opponent. You see, back in 1994 while Trey was busy campaigning for Clinton, Rand was busy founding Kentucky Taxpayers United.

  7. pocks says:

    specs, that’s an outright lie!

It was 1992 that Turncoat Trey was carrying the Democratic banner.

  8. Phil Miller says:

    Jerry’s a moron.

Support Rand Paul and, while you’re at it, support Peter Schiff against that pinko Chris Dodd.

  9. hailiebug says:

It will be interesting to see if the techno geeks, conspiracy fans and gold standard libertarians that supported his father will support him. He is probably more of a true conservative than big bidness republicans like little mitch. But don’t we have Gatewood for that?

  10. Jay Martin says:

This guy is an idiot. Anyone who talks about the “death panels” can’t be very smart. We don’t need anymore dumb politicians.

  11. Jay Martin says:

This guy is an idiot. Anyone who talks of the “death panels” in the health care bill cannot be very intelligent. We don’t need more dumb politicians. Remember Bush and Palin?

  12. observer says:

Rand appeared to have some good ideas, but then he drank the looney, death-panel kool-aid. He’s lost all credibility in my book.

  13. specs says:

    pocks, I stand corrected.

It was 1992 that Trey Grayson was campaigning for Clinton. Btw, what about the rumors that he was also a Clinton Delegate? Do you know if that is true? I heard he denies that, but not the actual campaigning for Clinton part.

  14. Jim says:

BREAKING NEWS: Rand Paul breaks Kentucky’s Political Fundraising Record for single day fundraising.

Rand Paul has raised $250424 in the past 14 hours and the money keeps rolling in! Keep up the good work, apparently Rand’s message is VERY popular!

I bet Trey Grayson’s office is getting a little hot right now but it’s not the thermostat that is broke.

  15. Interesting says:

“End of life counseling”= death panels. So who’s the idiot now, Jay Martin? You need to get your head out of Obama’s @$$ and see the light.

  16. Matt says:

Dr. Paul was not talking about End of Life Counseling in his Grandma interview. He was talking about a committee that will decide what treatments are worth paying for based on age. Obama made a similar comment when talking about the 105 year old that had a pacement installed at 100. He said “we” will have to tell doctors if maybe a pain pill is better than surgery. That is what he meant. If 1 out of 10 100 year olds don’t benefit from treatment then Grandma is a statistic.

  17. observer says:

what about the number of people – old, young, and middle aged – who die every year NOW because they either do not have health insurance or cannot afford the co-pays / percentages required by their health plan? What do you propose to do about this? Are these CURRENT death panels? Pull your heads out of the insurance corporation CEOs and their lobbists @$$ and look at what is happening around you.

  18. steve says:

The Democrats are very afraid of Rand Paul and so they should be. Rand Paul is a candidate that will destroy their communist agendas if elected. People are finally waking up and realizing what the Democratic Communist Party is all about.

  19. Ithink says:

If you hit your lifetime benefit limit with your insurance provider, it will not matter whether you are 10, 50, or 100, you won’t be getting that pacemaker. That’s the current reality, determined in part by a CEO whose daily salary is more than the total cost of the pacemaker.

  20. Buck Feshear says:

I look at health care the same way I look at food, housing, transportation, etc. in a free market economy. I get what I can afford. If I can’t afford it, I do without. If I get cancer and I can’t afford the treatment, then I guess I’ll just die. And that doesn’t bother me in the least. I’m right with God and don’t think it’s the duty of the populace at large or the taxpayers to keep me alive.
