WHAS-TV’s Mark Hebert is leaving the news business to take the helm of the public affairs office at the University of Louisville.

Hebert, a frequent guest on KET’s Comment on Kentucky, has been at the station since 1987, where he established a reputation as being a hard-hitting, thorough investigative reporter. Hebert broke the story in 2002 that then-Gov. Paul Patton was having an affair with nursing home operator Tina Conner.

Hebert said the job at the University of Louisville was something he just couldn’t pass up.

“I’m not burned out at all. I still love what I’m doing at WHAS,” Hebert said. “It’s just a great opportunity came along.”

His last day at WHAS, he said, will be May 2 — Derby Day. He is scheduled to start at U of L May 4.

He will be in charge of the university’s media and communications office, where he will help shape the university’s message on overall issues, such as funding, tuition and dealings with state officials.

For those who are fans of Hebert’s insightful and sometimes biting analysis on Comment on Kentucky, you will probably still see him from time to time filling in as a guest host for full-time host Ferrell Wellman. But it’s unlikely given his new job that he’ll be a guest, Hebert said.

As soon as Hebert becomes a state employee we can open records his every move, trip, expense report, coffee cup, gas mileage, twinkie and yes, down time on state dollars. Ahh, the payback!

I think I’ll chase him around campus for a day anyone wish to come along. We’ll make a day of it !

Probably time to move on before the newspaper lays him off.

I think he’ll find it quite different being in PR, having reporters give him a hard time because he’s not responding fast enough, not buying the spin he gives U of L and not making some top 5 list of PR people by some know-it-all reporter.

Welcome aboard Mark and good luck. You’ll need it.

  5. Blowbert says:

There won’t be much chasing blowbert around UL, he’ll be at the snack bar downin’ a doughnut with Joe Fumanchu from the CJ. Soon WHAS will fire all their dinos, but don’t worry blowbert, the state payroll will soon take care of you. Talk about sweet revenge, can you spell ORR!
