Judge arraigns 4 of 8 charged in Clay Co. corruption case
By Bill Estep – BESTEP@HERALD-LEADER.COM
Four people indicted in a Clay County vote fraud scheme pleaded not guilty Friday and were released on bond.
Schools Superintendent Douglas C. Adams, 57, County Clerk Freddy W. Thompson, 45, election officer Paul E. Bishop, 60, and William B. Morris, 66, who owns a local sanitation business appeared in court after a night in jail.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Wier released all four on their own recognizance, but he imposed restrictions. They are not allowed to contact current or potential witnesses in the case.
He set a May 19 trial date.
The other four charged in the case will be arraigned later Friday.
One of those four, R. Cletus Maricle, a senior judge, has been suspended from the bench effective Thursday, the day indictments were issued, according to a spokeswoman for the Administrative Office of the Courts.
