FRANKFORT — Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway said Tuesday that he thought U.S. Senator Jim Bunning’s comments about sitting Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg were without tact.

“I thought his comments were insensitive and callous,” Conway said. “I think for the good of Kentucky he needs to stand up and give a more thorough apology to Justice Ginsburg.”

Bunning told a group of Hardin County Republicans on Saturday that Ginsburg, who is being treated for pancreatic cancer, could be dead by the end of the year. Bunning apologized for his comments on Monday but misspelled Ginsburg’s name in the release.

Bunning’s senate seat is up for grabs in 2010 and the Kentucky senator has publicly said he does not feel that he has the backing of the Republican Party.

Conway, a Democrat, is considering a run for Bunning’s senate seat but said Tuesday that he probably won’t make that decision until after the General Assembly adjourns in late March.

“I think he is one of the most vulnerable incumbents if not the most vulnerable,” Conway said of Bunning. Besides some well-publicized skirmishes with Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, Bunning has not been a presence for Kentucky on the national stage, Conway said.

Conway said he has not yet formed a committee to look at fund-raising or set a fund-raising target. He said anyone who is running for the seat should have a solid financial base by late spring or early summer.

Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo has already said he will seek the Democratic nomination for the seat. State Auditor Crit Luallen has also been mentioned as a possible Democratic challenger.

  1. Jim Anderson Stivers says:

Since when did AG Conway give a hoot about what anybody said or wrote to him about.

Just another opportunity for Conway to get some MSM coverage. I hope he runs for the Senate, then he will see how little support he has, for a state wide office, without running on a majority party ticket.

Whats the big issue if 2009 for AG Conway?

    MORE MONEY FOR DRUG ENFORCEMENT.

Something that always catches the attention of the less than informed public.

  2. Pompey Road says:

Just another chance for him to stick his foot in his mouth again.

  3. Blackjack says:

    Grab a little spotlight, Jack.

  4. Bleu says:

Conway needs to apologize for the perjury his KBI/DCI agent committeed yesterday in the Franklin Circuit Court in front of Judge Shepherd before he starts telling others what they should do. Lucky for Conway though the clerks office is putting a one week delay before the public can get copies of the hearing.

  5. Tar Nashun says:

Say what you will about ol beanball, but the guy was right about Greenspan and these Wall Street genuises we all get to pay for now. Quit being so sensitive Jackie.

  6. ladybug says:

Mind your own business, Jackie, and stop trying to use this for political gain. It’s bad enough already.

  7. Brian says:

I think Kentuckians need to recognize there are problems with Jim Bunning’s statements and judgements. Is he out of his mind making a statement about a Justice of the Supreme Court’s health? Would you like Sen. Bunning diagnosing your parent’s or grandparent’s health?

  8. Two Cents Worth says:

I agree with AG Jack Conway. Sen. Bunning’s apology was not very tactful, but I say just let it rest. Bunning probably wouldn’t get it right the second time, either.
