Beshear appoints Lucas to veterans’ post
FRANKFORT — Former U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas is Gov. Steve Beshear’s choice to be commissioner of the state Department of Veteran’s Affairs.
In his new job, Lucas will oversee the daily operations of the department and coordinate 18 statewide field offices.
A native of Grant County, Lucas joined the U.S. Air Force shortly after his graduation from the University of Kentucky. He attained the rank of major.
From 1992 to 1998, Lucas was Boone County judge-executive. He then represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District for three two-year terms.
“Representative Lucas has committed himself to serving and protecting our state and nation, both as a commanding officer in the US Air Force and as an elected official,” Beshear said in a statement. “His outstanding record of leadership will prove to be an invaluable resource to the Kentucky Department of Veteran’s Affairs.”
Lucas will replace U.S. Army Brigadier General Leslie “Les” Beavers, who has retired.

He was also woefully absent from the largest part of his district after first getting elected in 98. Most local officials said they hadn’t heard or seen him since the 98 election, when Geoff Davis was running in 02 and 04. The only way to get in touch with him was to hang out at the Triple Crown CC.
