Judge dismisses lawsuit over appointment to higher ed board

A Franklin Circuit judge dismissed a lawsuit Tuesday brought by one of former Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher’s appointees to the Council on Postsecondary Education.

Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas D. Wingate ruled that Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear acted properly last year when he appointed someone else to the seat held by Virginia Fox.

Stumbo unseats Richards for House top spot

FRANKFORT — Kentucky lawmakers are spending the first day of the 2009 General Assembly electing their leaders for the next two years, with the most closely watched race between Democrats Jody Richards and Greg Stumbo for House speaker.

Richards, who has held the top spot in the House since 1994, and Stumbo, a former attorney general and House majority leader, expressed confidence. House Democrats will meet at 3 p.m. to vote.

Lobbyist ends partnership with official

Influential Frankfort lobbyist Bob Babbage last year failed to disclose his private business deals with Gov. Steve Beshear’s chief of staff, in violation of the state ethics law, documents show.

“It was just a mistake,” said Babbage, who filed a corrected disclosure report with the Executive Branch Ethics Commission last week, after the Herald-Leader asked him about the business deals. “It was an omission in the paperwork.”
