David Lynn Williams, the missing Democrat

November 06, 2007 | | Comments 2

FRANKFORT – Hundreds of pumped-up Kentucky Democrats are staring with rapt attention at the giant Victory Night 2007 screen in Frankfort’s civic center, where the votes are being updated for governor and the down-ticket races. But one race is missing from the screen: commissioner of agriculture.

It’s probably just as well.

The Democratic candidate, David Lynn Williams of Barren County, is losing badly to Republican incumbent Richie Farmer, former University of Kentucky basketball star.

And Williams wasn’t invited tonight, anyway.

Williams, who declined to speak to the Herald-Leader during his modest campaign, was not the party’s favorite choice for a race that — given Farmer’s sports fame — Democrats said they were unlikely to win in the first place. Williams deepened that isolation in an interview where he insulted a number of past and present Kentucky politicians and said he would run the state Agriculture Department like U.S. Army Gen. George Patton.

"David Lynn Williams has not been what I would call cooperative with party officials," said state Democratic Party spokeswoman Allison Haley. "Frankly, he hasn’t even returned our phone calls."

This race was the epitome of a freak show – a cyborg vs. a Freddie Mercury impersonator. Seriously, if this office were a cabinet appointment, we may actually have someone qualified to do the job instead of a has-been ball player looking for a handout.

John, you have to be kidding, right?
There is no worse feeling in the world than being Bruce Hendrickson, the only loser present at a celebration. Yeah, I’m sure David wishes he could have known that feeling. Instead, David spent the evening with friends and family. What the hell is wrong with that, and why is it even a story?!
